What To Expect With Eyelid Surgery

Posted by admin under Health and Fitness

Knowing what to expect from cosmetic surgery is very important prior to seriously considering the procedure. One very popular form of cosmetic surgery is eyelid surgery. Eyelid surgery (or blepharoplasty) has become increasingly popular over the last few years because improving the appearance around the eyes can greatly improve a person’s appearance. Understanding who can benefit and what to expect are the first steps a person can take to decide if this surgery is right for him or her.

Who can Benefit From This Surgery?

Most patients who can benefit from this type of cosmetic procedure are over the age of 35. As people age, fat deposits accumulate in the eyes which causes them to have a droopy effect that can be reduced with this surgery. Individuals under the age of 35 may benefit from this surgery in some cases where genetics or allergies have caused a person to have droopy eyelids. However, generally individuals over 35 will see the largest benefit.

What Can a Person Expect From This Surgery?

A person who gets eyelid surgery can expect the appearance of his or her eyes to greatly improve, especially if he or she opts to get surgery on both the top and bottom lids. Some individuals are able to get away with one part of the eye; however, most individuals benefit the most with both eyelids being done at the same time.

Although this surgery can have fantastic results since a person’s eyes are generally one of the most noticeable parts of the face, a person should not expect to be dramatically altered in appearance after this surgery. Any person considering this surgery should consult his or her surgeon regarding expectations before deciding to do the surgery as having unrealistic expectations can result in disappointment after the procedure.

What to Expect Before, During and After

Prior to the surgery, a patient should ask a friend or family member to drive them home from the surgery as the patient will not be able to drive. The patient should also plan on avoiding aspirin products for a couple of weeks prior to getting the surgery to help minimize bleeding. The person should get ice packs or similar items ready for once he or she gets home and make sure to pick up the eye drops recommended by the doctor.

The surgery itself will take around two hours to complete and involves incisions around the eye to remove the fat deposits and tighten the skin. A patient will receive local and perhaps general anesthetic and a type of sedation. The patient’s surgeon may also recommend that laser resurfacing be completed at the same time to help with the overall appearance of the eyes.

Patients will have stitches in their eyes for around a week after the cosmetic laser surgery. The person’s eyes will look normal a week or two after the cosmetic plastic surgery. Until then, they may look bruised. Many patients choose to take a week or two off of work after the cosmetic surgery because of the bruising.
